There’s a reason I never wear white. Body odor is one of those things we really don’t talk about. Sweating? Well, it’s probably the healthiest and most natural thing our amazing bodies do to take care of us, but some of us try to hide sweat completely. When it comes down to it, we can’t help but look at our underarms through the lens of our larger society. We’ve been trained not to speak openly about our bodily processes, many of which are anything but clean! We want to keep our armpits fresh and presentable because we fear others will form negative judgments about us if we don’t.
We say, ignore all that nonsense!
We can still live naturally and smell good. We’re perfect in our imperfections and that’s a truth we witness in nature everyday. It’s that delicate balance of push and pull that governs our natural world.
The more in tune we become with ourselves, the more we tune into our bodies and the natural functions that keep them thriving. Our armpits are part of this equation.
They are home to millions of bacteria, and not all of them are bad. When we use harsh additives in our skincare routine, we also end up killing off some of the good bacteria that keeps odor in check. Underarm hair wicks away moisture from skin and keeps our pits dry enough to lessen bacterial growth. Yet, many of us end up doing away with armpit hair entirely.
See? You just can’t win.
It might sound counterintuitive that most deodorants can make you smell worse over time, but they can. That’s disappointing to learn when all you’re really trying to do is walk around smelling clean. It’s safe to say that most of the commercial deodorants out there have conveniently looked past the science behind our anatomy.
Then, we also have to worry about sweat stains? Sweating is a way for the body to detox and remove toxins that are built up throughout the day. It’s a way for our body to keep itself in check and discard some of the wastes that may be holding it back from doing its job.
This brings us back to that white shirt.
There’s no stopping sweat and you probably wouldn’t want to since it could prolong a detox our bodies desperately need. Most antiperspirants work by blocking sweat glands and almost all of them achieve this with an aluminum ingredient. Doesn’t sound very natural, does it? When you block the natural flow of something, you almost always create a buildup somewhere else.
Think about what happens if an artery in our body has an obstruction. The blood is forced to go the other way, creating a potentially more serious issue somewhere else. While blocking your body’s natural detoxification isn’t nearly that risky, our lymphatic system experiences a barrier to the work it was created to do.
That’s why we created deodorant that works with the body, instead of against it. We base our ingredient list off of things that occur naturally. We don’t alter our ingredients, use additives or preservatives. Our deodorant is technically a deodorant because we don’t use ingredients that block pores. You will still sweat—and you should.
However, our deodorant is not a deodorant in the traditional sense. We use natural herbs and plants that have been made into essential oils without the use of alcohol. Believe it or not, the oils we use may actually keep odor at bay longer than some commercial deodorants or antiperspirants. How do we know this? Trial and error. I began making homemade deodorant back in 2016. The first batch didn’t come out anywhere close to “perfect” and wasn’t what I wanted it to be until nearly two years later. During those two years, I learned which ingredients worked well for my sensitive skin, and finally locked down the precise measurements and essential oils that would mark my craft.
Why did I take on what I thought would be a simple task, fail, and then pick it back up again? Well, my health depended on it at the time, but I also discovered I didn't smell as bad as I did when I was using other supposedly all-natural deodorants.
I had something good going and I needed to see it through.

We founded Asymmetry Naturals because we weren't satisfied with being told what to buy and were sick of feeling confused and helpless when we decided to start asking questions.
